Why Koba?
We believe that fashion can and should be free from the use of animal products, we believe that you can make equally beautiful and quality products without any animal suffers.
Rows of metal cages, stacked on each other in closed rooms, without windows, dirty and with piles of excrement on the floor, phenomena of madness, self-harm and cannibalism are in fur farms on the agenda, given the unnatural and contrary to the etogram conditions of the species involved in which individuals must survive and then be killed in gas chambers or with electric shocks.
The problems of these facilities are not only animal related, as these places pose a public health risk. During the pandemic, hundreds of mink farms were infected with the virus (causing a contagion from animals to humans). This type of farming has once again proved to be an unsustainable practice, with a strong impact on the environment and a serious threat to local biodiversity.
Europe is one of the largest producers of fur hides, with 5000 farms in 22 countries and supplying 64% of all fur furs. 11% of the production comes from the USA and Canada, and the rest from other countries such as Russia and China. Fortunately, more and more countries in Europe are putting this ban, there are already thirteen Member States that have formally banned the activity of breeding animals for the purpose of obtaining fur (Austria, Belgium - from 2023, Croatia, Estonia - from 2026, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia); these also include Italy with the ban in force since 1 January 2022. On Italy, it is necessary to open a parenthesis: in our country on the one hand we celebrate a significant victory for animal protection, on the other hand we note that more than five thousand breeding minks are still locked in cages, pending the interministerial decree that will decide its fate and regulate its possible transfer.
To put an end to this cruelty, over 80 animal rights groups from all over the EU have launched the European Citizens' Initiative Fur Free Europe. This campaign was a success: it closed one month ahead of the official deadline thanks to a record number of signatures collected: over 1.5 million. It has also successfully reached the threshold of signatures in 19 Member States. However, the institutions are not acting as we had hoped. In its official response, the EU Commission committed to consider a possible ban on fur farming and trade in fur products following a scientific opinion by EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority), to be drawn up by March 2025.
